Learn History Through Books: Band of Sisters by Lauren Willig

I found out about Band of Sisters from a post in a Facebook group I’m in (The Book Club Girls). The author posted about how the cover was chosen, and I fell in love with the idea of a group of women alumni from Smith College (which is still a women’s college to this day). This group went to France during wartime to help civilians (in World War I- which is a refreshing change of pace). The group included doctors who provided medical care and social workers who helped connect civilians with resources such as milk for babies. The Smith unit helped at least fifteen villages during the war! Learning WWI history through this book was truly inspiring.

Even though it took awhile for the group to truly become a sisterhood and work together, the ending of Band of Sisters was remarkable and inspiring. I was aggravated at the beginning of the book, especially at the drama and strife within the group, but I’m glad I stuck with it. This is a good book to learn about WWI history.
