Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance

This is a must-read, especially if you teach in the South or Appalachia!

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance is an insightful depiction of the poor working class families in America. It tells of struggles you may not have realized existed, and that these are much more commonplace than you might think. This book will really help you understand what your students may be going through.

This is a must-read, especially if you teach in the South or Appalachia!

Age Recommendation:

I would highly recommend using Hillbilly Elegy to teach at a high school or introductory Sociology level. You can use it to discuss socioeconomic status, inequality, poverty, socialization, culture, language–just to start with.

I have not seen the movie–if you have, let me know what you think in the comments!
